Methodology: where the values come from and how they are checked

Where the values come from

Each of the 183 entries names a source you can open yourself. We use public institutions and agencies (MedlinePlus of the US National Library of Medicine, NIH, FDA drug labels, FAO, DGE), guidelines, professional societies and peer-reviewed open-access articles. Where sources disagree, the note of the entry says so.

What we do not show

A reference range is shown only when a reliable source supports it. 135 further entries are deliberately not released because no established range exists (e.g. research markers), because it depends strongly on the assay, or because only target values exist. When in doubt we give no reference value.

How conversion works

Every test has a base unit; all other units relate to it by a factor (and, for units such as mmol/mol, an offset). Mass and amount of substance are linked through the molar mass; the factors are recomputed against that molar mass automatically on every change. Numbers are shown with sensible rounding. Units that are only another spelling (mg/dL = mg/100 mL) appear as one field.

How it is checked

Automatically: factor check, a test of every entry in the app (enter a value in one unit, compare all others), tests of the generated pages and a monthly check of all source links. Manually: values are read against the source; pages that block bots are checked in a browser. There is currently no review by named medical experts; it is planned.

Limits

Reference ranges differ between laboratories, assays, age, sex and cycle phase. The range on your lab report is decisive. Conversions of international units (IU) apply only to the named substance and form. MedConvert does not replace medical advice.
